The view through the open
cubbies from the bottom bunk. The cubbies
screen the bunk from the door, and provide
double-sided storage for books and objects.
-
The headboard of the bottom
bunk has a cut out that holds bedside items.
and a wall-mounted display box, all made
out of ash veneer on plywood with exposed
edges.
-
The drawers under the bed
hold toys and bedding.
-
The bunkbed is not built-in,
it is a separate piece of furniture that
can be taken apart to form two separate
beds and an open storage unit.
-
The hole detail continues
in the bottom bunk, where drawers under
the bed hold toys. The holes are finger
pulls and all drawers have soft close slides.
-
At night, a nightlight
in the bookshelves projects light out of
the holes.
-
Holes in the back of the
bookshelves allow taller people to look
in, and kids in the top bunk to spy out.

ladder with bookshelves and wall storage
for the upper bunk.
-
Wall-mounted boxes provide
additional storage in the room. The headboard
of the bottom bunk has a niche for nightlights
and water cups, whereas the top bunk has
a shelf. A solid oak ladder accesses the
top bunk, which has it's own bookshelf
at the foot of the bed.
-
One side of the bunkbeds
is open cubbies, cabinets, and bookshelves
and also acts as a screen when you walk
in the room. The holes in the back of the
top bookshelves allow peeks in to the (hopefully)
sleeping occupant. A plywood 'garage' toybox
opens with a soft close hinge that creates
a ramp up for trucks and cars.
