The cabinets are marine
ply and maple. The maple veneer was mounted
onto mdf, then sawn in lines 1/8" deep,
giving the wood a 'corduroy' appearance.
The edges are trimmed in solid maple.
The storage benches under
the shelves are topped with rubber to provide
a no-slip surface when the benches are
used as step stools to access books on
the upper shelves. A pull-out shelf holds
a turntable and receiver.
In the living room corner,
a seating area paneled in mahogany has
a drop-down table for reading and working.
The shelves were fitted
around existing appliances. Open plywood
boxes hold dishes, modified Ikea cabinets
above hold pantry items..

The renovation also included
new kitchen cabinets, which used premade
Ikea cabinet bodies with custom fronts
of oiled marine plywood. The shelves are
green lexan, and the wall tiles are glass.
